He had a prominent, slightly aquiline nose,¹ over which there was a light or radiance, such that one who did not observe him carefully might think his nose was high and sharply raised.² He had a thick beard, smooth cheeks, very dark eyes, and a broad mouth.³ His teeth were bright white and slightly spaced.⁴ The line of hair running from his chest to his navel was fine and delicate. His neck was like the neck of a sculpted statue, in the clarity and brightness of silver.⁵

He was well-proportioned in build, sturdy and firmly formed, with his chest and abdomen even, and a broad chest. There was a wide space between his shoulders, and his joints were large and strong.⁶ Those parts of his body normally uncovered shone brightly. From the upper chest down to the navel there was a line of hair flowing like a fine stroke,⁷ while his chest and belly were otherwise free of hair. His forearms, shoulders, and upper chest were hairy. His forearms were long, his palms broad, his limbs straight and well-shaped, and his hands and feet somewhat thick and strong.⁸ His extremities were long, the arches of his feet were high,⁹ and the soles were smooth, such that water would run off them.¹⁰

When he moved, he moved with firmness and vigor. He stepped with a forward lean, yet walked gently and with dignity. His pace was brisk; when he walked, it was as though he were descending a slope. When he turned, he turned with his whole body. His gaze was lowered; he looked toward the ground longer than he looked toward the sky. Most of his looking was by brief, observant glances. He would let his companions walk ahead of him, and he would be the first to greet whomever he met with peace.

He said: I asked him, “Describe to me his speech.”

He replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was continually sorrowful, constantly reflective, and never at ease…
