Introduction: The Vision of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)
Corrupt rulers ascending his pulpit
1 – Warning against the lords of evil
Ibn Jarir narrated from Sahl ibn Sa‘d who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) saw Banu so-and-so leaping upon his pulpit like monkeys, and that grieved him. He was never again seen smiling openly until he passed away. Then Allah revealed: ‘And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people’ (Al-Isra’ 17:60).” (1)
In Al-Durr al-Manthur (2), Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Ibn ‘Imran that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
“I saw the sons of Al-Hakam ibn Abi al-‘As upon the pulpits as if they were monkeys.” And Allah revealed concerning that: ‘And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people and the accursed tree in the Qur’an’ (Al-Isra’ 17:60), meaning Al-Hakam and his offspring.”
It also reports that Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Ya‘la ibn Murrah who said:
“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘I saw Banu Umayyah upon the pulpits of the earth, and they will rule over the people, and they will find them…’”

“…lords of evil.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was deeply concerned by this, so Allah revealed:
‘And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people’ (Al-Isra’ 17:60). (1)
It also reports that Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Mardawayh, Al-Bayhaqi (in Al-Dalā’il), and Ibn ‘Asakir narrated from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) saw Banu Umayyah upon the pulpits, and that distressed him. So Allah revealed to him: ‘It is only a worldly dominion that they are given,’ and thus his eyes were comforted. This is His saying: ‘And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people.’”
The complete noble verse is:
‘And [remember] when We said to you, “Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people.” And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people, and [likewise] the accursed tree in the Qur’an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.’ (Al-Isra’ 17:60) (2)

2 – The Call to Support His Grandson Al-Husayn
Al-Hanafi Al-Qandūzi narrated in Yanabi‘ al-Mawaddah, in Al-Mishkat, from Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith, the wife of Al-‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both):
“She entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I saw a disturbing dream last night.’ He said: ‘What was it?’ She said: ‘I saw as if a piece of your blessed body was cut off and placed in my lap.’
He replied: ‘You have seen something good. Fatimah, if Allah wills, will give birth to a boy who will be placed in your lap.’
She said: ‘So Fatimah gave birth to Al-Husayn, and he was placed in my lap, and I nursed him with the milk of Qutham. One day I entered upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and placed him in his lap. Then I turned slightly, and suddenly his eyes…’”
