History also tells us the story of Al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, who was one of the companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He was the son of the Prophet’s aunt Safiyyah and the nephew of Khadijah. He participated with the Messenger in Badr, Uhud, the Trench, Hudaybiyyah, Khaybar, the conquest of Mecca, Hunayn, and Ta’if, and in the conquest of Egypt. He was among those reported to have pledged allegiance under the tree. He stood beside Ali (peace be upon him) at the Saqifah and during the council (shura), and he was with Banu Hashim in the house of Fatimah (peace be upon her). He testified to the will of al-Zahra (peace be upon her) when she was buried secretly and attended her funeral. However, he later fell at the Battle of the Camel, where he was one of its commanders and among those who incited the march to fight Ali (peace be upon him).

Therefore, the most important safeguard against a bad end is the constant reinforcement of true beliefs, transforming them within oneself into certainty, and removing all doubt and hesitation about them. This should be accompanied by continual self-purification, not relying on one’s perceived righteousness, and not delaying the treatment of spiritual illnesses so they do not worsen and become difficult to cure. Along with all this, one must sincerely devote intention and deeds to God and strive to purify them from any blemish.
Here lies the benefit of the blessed month of Ramadan, during which many of us make progress in refining ourselves and drawing closer to God. The lesson in benefiting from this noble month is to remain steadfast upon what we have attained and not lose it by returning after Ramadan to improper deeds and morals.
