TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the failure of US plots against the country and said “the enemies’ shift in tone” will not have any effect on the will of the nation and government.
“The enemy can never bring the Iranian nation to its knees and the Islamic Republic of Iran will be victorious in this arena with its patience,” Rouhani said, addressing a meeting between Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and a gathering of high-ranking government officials, ambassadors of Muslims countries to Iran, and people in Tehran on Wednesday.
“Today, the enemies are forced to change their plans in the region and their tone towards Iran,” he said, referring to US calls for negotiation with Iran.
“However, these remarks will not change or have any effects on our path and will,” the president added.
“If they (the US) meet their responsibilities and respect law and regulations and make up for the damages they have inflicted, then, they may see other conditions and ways to solve problems, otherwise, they would get nowhere by shifting tone and words,” Rouhani stated.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that Washington was prepared for unconditional talks with Iran.
The remarks came against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since last year after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.
Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans and selling crude oil.
