On the Reward of Feeding Those Who Fast

On the Reward of Feeding Those Who Fast.

What to Break the Fast With, and Some of the Virtues of the Month of Ramadan
It is narrated from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him):
“Whoever provides ifṭār (breaks the fast) for a fasting person will have a reward equal to his reward.”
And from Abū al-Ḥasan (peace be upon him):
“Your breaking the fast of your fasting brother (by feeding him) is better than your own fasting.”
And from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
“Whoever provides ifṭār for a fasting person will receive a reward equal to his, without diminishing anything from the fasting person’s reward, as well as the reward of whatever deeds are performed through the strength gained from that food.”
And from him (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
“Whoever provides ifṭār for a fasting person shall have with Allah the reward of freeing a slave and forgiveness of his past sins.”
It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, not all of us are able to provide food for a fasting person.”
He replied:
“Allah is Generous and grants this reward even to one who can offer nothing more than a sip of milk, a drink of sweet water, or a few dates with which to break the fast.”
And from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him):
“Pray first, then break your fast—unless you are with a group waiting to break the fast; in that case, break the fast with them and then pray. Otherwise, begin with the prayer, for two obligations have come upon you: breaking the fast and the prayer. Begin with the better of them, and the better of them is the prayer.”
Then he (peace be upon him) said:
“You pray while still fasting, and that prayer is recorded for you; then you conclude it with the fast—this is more beloved to me.”
And from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
“When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates; if he does not find any, then with water, for water is purifying.”
Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) used to begin his ifṭār with something sweet; if he did not find that, then with sugar or a few small dates; and if none of that was available, then with lukewarm water. He used to say:
“It cleanses the stomach, strengthens the eyesight and vision, washes away sins as water washes away dirt, calms the veins and excessive bile, cuts phlegm, extinguishes heat, and removes headache.”
And from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him):
“When a fasting person fasts, his eyes grow weak; and when he breaks his fast with something sweet, they return to their normal state.”
And know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) strongly emphasized during this month the exhortation to fear Allah, to avoid envy and disputes, and that the fasting person should guard his stomach and private parts, and restrain his tongue. For it is a month that Allah has honored and preferred over all other months.
The gates of Paradise are opened, so ask your Lord not to close them upon you. The gates of Hell are closed, so ask your Lord not to open them for you. And the devils are chained, so ask your Lord not to let them have authority over you.”
And from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him):
“When the first night of the month of Ramadan arrives, Allah forgives whomever He wills among His servants. On the following night, He doubles the number of those He frees (from the Fire), and so it continues; and on the last night of it, He multiplies all whom He has freed.”
