News- Middle East: President Vladimir Putin says Russia supports Iran’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and interests amid mounting threats from the United States.
Putin made the remark in a message to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday marking the 47th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.
In his congratulatory message, Putin said relations between Iran and Russia are friendly and based on good neighborliness.
Russia supports Iran’s bids to protect its sovereignty and legitimate interests and to ensure national security under the ongoing difficult international circumstances, he added.
The Russian president expressed confidence that the comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran will be steadily strengthened.
Putin also wished Pezeshkian success and all Iranians prosperity and well-being.
On February 6, Iran and the United States held a new round of indirect nuclear negotiations in the Omani capital of Muscat.
The negotiations came amid the United States’ significant military buildup in the region, raising fears of a potential military confrontation with the Islamic Republic.
At the same time, several US-based groups closely aligned with Israel have pushed for harsher measures against Tehran.
Anti-war organizations, however, caution that another confrontation would be disastrous, pointing to the 12-Day War in June 2025 as a stark example.
On June 13, 2025, Israel launched strikes on Iranian civilian, military, and nuclear sites, killing senior commanders and nuclear scientists in the opening hours.
