Mehr News recently ran a news item featuring former head of the Islamic Republic’s Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Rafiqdoost.
In the report, the former head of the Revolution Guard mentions a story from the 8 year imposed war in which they spoke to Imam Khomeini about furthering the Shah’s nuclear weapons program.
“[During the 8 year war] We approached Imam Khomeini to get his views regarding whether we should continue our research into attaining nuclear weapons. He said not to pursue such weapons, said it was forbidden in Islam, and that beyond that, Iran did not need such weapons. Thus, we immediately stopped all of our activities related to this.”
Mohsen Rafiqdoost was the chief of Imam Khomeini’s security detail in 1979 during the Revolution, and helped found the Revolutionary Guards.
He is noted for having driven Imam Khomeini, from the Tehran international airport into Tehran, during the triumphant return to Iran from exile, while millions of Iranians crowded the road to welcome Imam Khomeini back. He has told journalists this was the most important day of his life and “crowds were all over the car, touching and hanging on to it.”
