The Safeguards in the Maintenance of Society from Deviation in Light of Surah Al-Hujurat

Verifying and Clarifying News and Its Relationship to the Moral Education of the Islamic Community:

This passage represents an integral part of the ethics and manners of a community that believes in God and His Messenger, and whose foundations are stable only when these aspects of this blessed Surah are complete. In such a community, there is no place for alarmists and skeptics who fabricate lies and malicious rumors aimed at weakening and dismantling the structure of the faithful community. It is a society built on principles and foundations that ensure its security and safety, protecting it from any destructive storm. Any negligence of these principles will expose the security and safety of the society to the risk of strife, ignite conflicts among its members, and rob it of one of its most important safeguards. Ignoring the presence of wise and just leadership in the community will lead it into chaos and doctrinal and moral corruption. Even if some of its individuals escape from this, individual salvation does not lead to communal security. Therefore, it is necessary to educate the community with these morals, which are a central part of the moral education of the Islamic community.

This education means not being swayed by every advertisement, rumor, or false statement. How many words have led to consequences, positions, and actions, and upon researching their sources and verifying their truthfulness, it turns out that they were fabricated and untrue. Those who follow lies without verification will be blameworthy by God, His Messenger, and their faithful community. On the other hand, those who build on true news will be praised by God, His Messenger, and their community, ensuring the safety and security of this community, which is a trust in the hands of each of its members, and they are accountable for it on the Day of Judgment.

The Dangers of False News and Rumors

Many of the painful events and destructive conflicts occurring in our contemporary world, as well as those that have occurred throughout Islamic history, including murder, bloodshed, looting, and destruction, are due to the rumors and lies propagated by hypocrites and infiltrators within the faithful community, aiming to dismantle it, sever its ties, and undermine its foundations. How much we need the ethics of this blessed Surah and to remain constantly cautious of the news from these hypocrites, especially in a society where values have become mixed, making it difficult to distinguish between truth and falsehood. We might be deceived by the glitter of some individuals, accepting their words and building certain positions and actions upon them, only to later realize the great mistake we made because of that person or that particular source. They appeared gentle as a lamb, but their true nature is that of a fox in its cunning or a scorpion in its stings. What is required is verification, verification, and more verification… The rumor, as some define it, is: “The stories, words, and news that people spread, and the tales they tell, without verifying their truthfulness or checking their accuracy.” The origin of these rumors is often a report from an individual, a news source, a newspaper, a magazine, a broadcast, television, a written letter, or a recorded message.

These rumors have multiple effects. They affect the happiness and psychological security of individuals, disrupt families—how many families have been torn apart by these rumors, how many homes have been destroyed, how much wealth has been lost, and how many children have been displaced—all due to a rumor from a hypocrite or a liar. They also affect relationships and bonds between individuals within a society. Allah, through this blessed Surah, has laid down principles and standards for the establishment of a society, and among these principles is the prevalence of love, brotherhood, and peace among members of the community. “The Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not wrong him, nor does he forsake him, nor does he betray him,” and “The believer to the believer is like a building, each part supporting the other.” This is the spirit that Allah intended to instill in this Surah, urging its followers to adopt it. As for establishing relationships based on division, dispute, difference, and corruption between people, this is what Islam fought against. Rumors are a major cause of spreading these reprehensible morals that Islam has forbidden. Allah has specified in the Qur’an a comprehensive deterrent system to combat rumors, beginning with the psychological education of individuals, and including preventive and deterrent measures to address these news, some of which He outlined in this passage of the Surah.
