A senior British police official has warned that anyone travelling to Syria from the UK will be detained after returning home.

There is a “huge concern” about those who travel to Syria to fight alongside the militants against the Syrian government, Manchester’s police chief Peter Fahy said on Saturday.

Referring to Syria’s nearly three-year-old conflict, Fahy said the country “is an incredibly dangerous place and you will be arrested and stopped at the border if you try and come back.”

“We’ve stopped quite a number of people because we’re very, very clear about what will happen,” he added.

Sixteen people have been detained this month in the UK after coming back from Syria on suspicion of terrorism offences, compared with 24 in the whole of 2013.

“Our biggest concern is people attending terrorist training camps or fighting in war zones then returning to the UK as terrorists,” Fahy noted, adding, “They are potentially a threat to British interests both abroad and at home.”

Police officials have urged anyone thinking about going to Syria for any reason to pay attention to warnings issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

According to extracts from a study by British defense consultancy IHS Jane’s published in the Daily Telegraph, some 100,000 militants are operating in Syria.

The militants have split into some 1,000 brands since the crisis began in Syria, according to the study, which is based on intelligence estimates and interviews with militants.

More than one hundred British nationals, along with militants from the US, Canada, France, and the Netherlands, have reportedly joined the foreign-backed groups in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly crisis since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating in Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced due to the violence in the Middle Eastern country.
