An Al Qaeda member was planning to smash a plane into a US ship in Dubai’s Port Rashid, it has been claimed before a US court.
The Americans claim that Abd Al Rahim Al Nashiri was in the process of recruiting a suicide bomb crew to carry out the mission when the CIA snatched him in Dubai in 2002. The plot allegedly involved flying the plane into the bridge of the ship, causing it to explode with huge loss of life.
They also claim that Al Nashiri was planning to hit other American military ships coming into Dubai ports. The information is contained in legal documents submitted by the US government in a trial at Guantanamo Bay, where Al Nashiri is accused of planning the suicide bombing of the USS Cole (pictured) off the coast of Yemen in 2000, in which 17 US servicemen were killed and nearly 40 injured.
The US government claims the suicide bombing of the Cole, and the planned suicide bombing of another military ship in Dubai, point to a pattern of plotting against several US military ships. They have also included details of Al Nashiri’s alleged Dubai plot in a biography of him posted on the US Guantanamo Bay Military Tribunals website.
Al Nashiri has already been sentenced to death in Yemen for the USS Cole attack and could face another death sentence before US military courts. It emerged this week that a military judge has ordered the CIA to explain where Al Nashiri was held during a four-year gap between his capture in Dubai in 2002 and his appearance in Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba in 2006.
The US government has already admitted, in an internal torture review, that Al Nashiri was “water boarded” by sticking his head under water for long periods of time during interrogation. However, it has steadfastly refused to say where it was holding him all those years.
