**European Press Monitors Signs of “Islamophobia” After the Paris Events**

Many predicted that after the recent terrorist events in Paris, manifestations of Islamophobia and some racist acts against immigrants coming from North African and Arab countries would follow, whether in France or across much of Europe. This began to be noticed starting the day after the Paris bombings, even reaching the point where Muslims were described as “bastards” in some newspapers within the continent.

**Demonstrations and Writings on Mosques**

Around 150 people organized a demonstration against immigrants in the streets of Pontivy last Saturday. According to France 3, the demonstration witnessed acts of violence that left three people injured, including a person of North African origin. The French channel’s website indicated that the attacks were carried out by some demonstrators belonging to the far right.

The website of the newspaper *Le Parisien* published an article stating that a number of Islamophobic incidents had been recorded in the streets and in places belonging to Muslims in the country, starting from Saturday morning.

According to the same source, racist phrases were written in the streets, in addition to graffiti being drawn on Muslim places of worship in the country, and even on their shops. Among the phrases recorded were “France, wake up,” “Long live free France,” and “France for the French,” among others. Cross symbols were also drawn on several mosques.

The newspaper said that surveillance cameras at one place of worship in a French neighborhood captured two masked individuals writing their slogans on the front of the building.

**Italian Journalist: “Muslim Bastards”**

Perhaps the strangest racist reaction to the Paris events came from the editor-in-chief of the Italian newspaper *Libero*, who wrote an editorial titled “The Muslim Bastards” last Saturday—an article that sparked considerable controversy both inside and outside Italy.

The Italian journalist Maurizio Belpietro did not stop at publishing the article; he later explained what he meant by the controversial title “Bastardi islamici” in a tweet, saying that the word “Bastardi” means “bastards” or “illegitimate children,” describing those who do not know the meaning of the word as “ignorant.”

According to the Italian press, Tomas Notarini, editor-in-chief of the newspaper *Peace Reporter*, filed a lawsuit against the author of the article, arguing that he should be charged with “inciting religious hatred and insulting Islam.”
