The Supernatural Intervention to Correct Social Deviation
When browsing the verses of the Holy Quran, we find indications of the intervention of the unseen hand in preventing the dominance of societal deviation over human reality, and the supernatural intervention in many instances to correct the course of human society.
Among the events that the Quran refers to in terms of correcting societal paths are the stories of the people of Noah, the people of Lot, the people of Hud, and the people of Salih—peoples whom God Almighty destroyed because they became a source of absolute corruption and had no inclination toward righteousness. In contrast, the people of Jonah were pardoned by God after they sincerely repented.
The Quran also tells us about the parting of the sea for the people of Moses (peace be upon him) to save them and the drowning of Pharaoh and his army. Divine retribution did not affect all Egyptians but was limited to the ruling hierarchy, its military forces, and those who followed Pharaoh when he called his people to destroy the Israelites. This demonstrates direct divine intervention in addressing issues of deviation.
As for indirect intervention, God, by His will and dominion, moves human society toward curbing the movement of deviation. Even if society does not completely eliminate this deviant movement, God Almighty says:
“And these days [of varying fortunes] We alternate among the people so that Allah may know those who believe and take witnesses from among you, and Allah does not like the wrongdoers.”
And He says:
“Those who were expelled from their homes unjustly—except that they say, ‘Our Lord is Allah’—and if Allah did not repel people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is mentioned often, would have been destroyed. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.”
And He Almighty says:
“And if the people of the villages had believed and feared Allah, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied, so We seized them for what they used to earn.”
And He says:
“Indeed, they plan a plan, and We plan a plan, so grant delay to the disbelievers. Indeed, their plot will not succeed.”
And He says:
“And they planned, and Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners.”
This illustrates the social movement aspect of divine intervention.
