16. Listen to Him While He Recites Stories from the Qur’an
One of the mistakes made by some educators is not paying attention to the child when they are speaking, while we expect them to listen to us when we are the ones talking. When a child is telling a story from the Qur’an, for example, we should listen to them, engage with them, and correct any mistakes they might make in narrating the story due to a misunderstanding of words or the general meanings. Children tend to engage more when they are telling the story themselves than when they are just listening to it. If the story discusses guidance and misguidance or good and evil, they will connect more with it, loving guidance and good while disliking misguidance and evil. Additionally, narrating the story helps develop their public speaking and storytelling skills. Listening to them also takes them from the memorization stage to the understanding and explanation stage, as they will try to understand the story better in order to explain it to others. This process also boosts their self-confidence. Therefore, you should listen to them attentively and not ignore or disregard them.
17. Encourage Them to Lead the Prayer (Especially the Voluntary Prayers)
Mothers can do this at home as well, having the children take turns leading each other in prayer, particularly for the voluntary prayers.
18. Involve Them in the Family Qur’an Circle
When the family gathers to read the Qur’an, it allows the child to experience the Qur’an in a new way, as this gathering and reading is solely for the Qur’an. The child feels that the Qur’an is different from everything else around them. The family can do this even for just 5 minutes.
19. Encourage Them to Join the Mosque Study Circle
This idea is important because it develops the child’s skills in reading and reciting the Qur’an with proper tajweed, in addition to encouraging healthy competition.
20. Pay Attention to Their Questions About the Qur’an
Be sure to answer their questions in a simple and understandable way, according to their level of comprehension. You might also tell them some stories to help clarify things.
