Middle East: “General Soleimani, architect of the ‘Axis of Resistance,’ shaped a framework that goes beyond current policies, reflecting the ideals of the Islamic Revolution and Iran’s Constitution—what should be called ‘resistance-based diplomacy,’” Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said recently.
Major General Qassem Soleimani, heralded as one of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s most skilled and experienced battlefield commanders, was assassinated in a cowardly US airstrike near Baghdad’s international airport six years ago.
On the fateful day of his martyrdom in January 2020, a remotely controlled US Reaper drone from a US air base in Nevada fired three Hellfire missiles at the two-vehicle convoy carrying General Soleimani, ordered by US President Donald Trump.
The deputy leader of the Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was also assassinated along with eight others who were accompanying Soleimani in the convoy.
As commemoration events across Iran, Lebanon, the Occupied Palestinian Territories and many parts of the world were held this week, tributes pouring in recalled his brilliant leadership of the Iranian Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, which serves as the Islamic Republic’s special foreign operations unit.
At an event in Moscow, Sergei Baburin, a former deputy speaker of the State Duma and current secretary general of the Russian People’s Union party, described the late commander as a warrior against “global evil.”
He said General Soleimani taught the world how to confront a hypocritical, multi-faced entity, of which global Zionism is a key part.
“We must continue his path, which ultimately leads to the liberation of Al-Quds as the capital of Palestine and the end of Zionist occupation,” he asserted.
Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, described the top anti-terror commander a complete reflection of humanitarian values and a symbol of the struggle against oppression and injustice in the world.
Ozgur Bursali, secretary general of Turkey’s Vatan Party, said General Soleimani was a widely known figure whose fight against imperialism and Zionism tied his name to the defense of the oppressed and made him popular among freedom seekers worldwide.
Meanwhile, a bishop of the Moscow Orthodox Church, a deputy head of Russia’s Sunni Muslim Religious Directorate, and several Russian Muslim and Christian scholars, as well as cultural, political and academic figures, described General Soleimani as a lasting legacy for all humanity and a symbol of resistance against oppression and commitment to human dignity.
Back in 2013, a former CIA official in Iraq told The New Yorker magazine: “Soleimani is the single most powerful operative in the Middle East…”, echoing the high regard his nemesis – grudgingly – held him in.
In his distinguished role as the architect of the “Axis of Resistance,” General Soleimani’s strategic support for Palestine’s freedom struggle against Zionism’s illegal settler colonial regime was acknowledged by Palestinian leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar, both of whom were martyred during the ongoing Gaza genocide.
Following General Soleimani’s targeted assassination, Sinwar paid a particularly moving tribute to him when he said: “In 2017, General Soleimani communicated with the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades and the al-Quds Brigades, confirming that Iran, the IRGC, and the Quds Force all stand with the Palestinian people with everything they possess, in defence of al-Quds.
“He clearly stated that all our capabilities and potential are at your disposal in defence of al-Quds. Soleimani did not stipulate (any conditions) or ask for anything in return.,” Sinwar said. I
Haniyeh was also effusive in his praise of General Soleimani.
“The martyr commander Soleimani sacrificed himself for Palestine and its people, so he is ‘The Martyr of al-Quds’,” he said at the late Iranian general’s funeral in Tehran.
His iconic military prowess was also instrumental in defeating the Zionist military interlopers when they were ousted from Lebanon back in 2006.
He sent military assistance to Hezbollah and was present in Lebanon himself to help oversee the operations against the Israeli regime. Hezbollah called him the field commander of the “Axis of Resistance.
The martyred leader of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, in a televised speech from Dahiyeh in the south of the Lebanese capital of Beirut during the 3rd anniversary of General Soleimani’s martyrdom, paid a glowing tribute to him.
He said the top resistance commander surpassed both time and place and belonged not only to Iran but to all free nations of the world.
“Martyr Soleimani is a martyr… that transcends time and place. He is not a martyr of Iraq, Iran or Syria, but rather a martyr of the entire world. He was a great leader during the battle with Daesh and pushed back the Israelis way beyond their walls.”
General Soleimani’s visionary tactics in battling sectarian terrorism earned him respect and loyalty across borders stretching from Baghdad to Damascus and Beirut.
He stood as a giant bulwark against the evil designs of the Zionist regime and its agents, who, since the historic 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew the notorious Pahlavi dynasty regime, have unsuccessfully plotted to weaken, fragment, or destabilize the Islamic Republic of Iran.
General Soleimani possessed comprehensive knowledge of the plague of Zionism and its colonial goals to subjugate the Levant through borderless aggression and expansionism.
His assassination was thus a premeditated act of terror designed to dismantle the security architecture of the “Axis of Resistance” and throw it into disarray.
Instead, the formidable legacy of General Soleimani’s leadership instilled across various tiers of the battlefield, resulting in stronger regional deterrence to the utter dismay of American and Israeli calculations.
Indeed, General Soleimani’s legacy in building the capacity of resistance movements against oppression and occupation will endure across borders for countless generations.
