Hezbollah and the Future Prospects – Abdul Sattar Al-Jabri

## Episode One / The Circumstances of Emergence

When examining a personality or political entity that has had an impact on the reality of the region, it is essential to study the circumstances of its emergence and development within the balance of power, as this helps in forming an objective understanding of the subject under discussion.

In 1979, the Islamic Revolution triumphed in Iran, carrying with it support for liberation movements around the world. One of its priorities was to adopt a position of hostility toward the usurping Zionist entity.

At the same time, the Lebanese civil war broke out, driven by the Zionist entity. One of the aims of that war was to push the Palestinians away from the borders of occupied Palestine. Palestinian fighters had been entering the occupied territories to carry out military operations against the Zionist occupation and then returning to their positions in the camps in Lebanon. Consequently, Zionist forces invaded Lebanese territory and reached Beirut, allowing their Lebanese allies to carry out the Sabra and Shatila massacre. These events ended with the removal of the Palestinians from the borders with the occupied territories and the relocation of the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Lebanon to Tunisia.

In those difficult circumstances, the martyr Chamran was in Lebanon. He met with many young Lebanese Shiites, and thus began the story of the founding of the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon, which was given the name **Hezbollah**, becoming the military and political force that, over four decades, altered the political and security balance in Lebanon and the region.

The circumstances of Hezbollah’s establishment were those of defensive jihad to protect Lebanese territory against the Zionist invasion of Lebanon. The fighters of the jihad succeeded in forcing the Zionist occupation forces to withdraw from Lebanese land, and they also compelled U.S. naval forces and French forces to leave Lebanese territory through their operations, which demonstrated unparalleled courage, high-level planning and secrecy, and exceptional capability in carrying out qualitative operations previously unseen in the region.
