## Tawakkul in the Hadith
### The Meaning of Tawakkul
It is narrated:
“Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has sent me to you with a gift that He has not given to anyone before you.’
The Messenger of Allah said: ‘What is it?’
He said: ‘Patience—and better than it.’
He said: ‘And what is better than it?’
He said: ‘Contentment—and better than it.’
He said: ‘And what is better than it?’
He said: ‘Asceticism—and better than it.’
He said: ‘And what is better than it?’
He said: ‘Sincerity—and better than it.’
He said: ‘And what is better than it?’
He said: ‘Certainty—and better than it.’
He said: ‘And what is that?’
He said: ‘The highest degree of that is reliance upon Allah, Mighty and Exalted.’
I said: ‘And what is reliance upon Allah, Mighty and Exalted?’
He said: ‘It is knowing that the created being neither harms nor benefits, neither gives nor withholds, and abandoning hope in creation. When the servant becomes like this, he does not act for anyone other than Allah, does not hope in nor fear anyone but Allah, and does not obey anyone except Allah. This is tawakkul.’”¹⁸
From Imam ‘Ali (peace be upon him):
> **“Tawakkul is freeing oneself from [reliance on one’s own] power and strength.”**¹⁹
Imam al‑Sadiq (peace be upon him) was asked about the limit of tawakkul, and he said:
> **“That you fear nothing alongside Allah.”**²⁰
—
### What Leads to Tawakkul
Imam ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said:
> **“Tawakkul arises from the strength of certainty.”**²¹
He also said:
> **“Good reliance is a sign of true faith.”**²²
He also said:
> **“Whoever trusts in Allah relies upon Him.”**²³
