On the authority of Imam Ali: “The believer’s wealth is in God Almighty.”
**Reliance on God (Tawakkul)**
From Abu ‘Abdullah (Imam al‑Sadiq), peace be upon him:
“Indeed, wealth and honor wander about; when they find a place of reliance on God (tawakkul), they settle there.”¹
From Imam ‘Ali, peace be upon him:
“The richness of the believer is through God, the Exalted.”²
He (peace be upon him) also said:
“Richness through God is the greatest richness; seeking richness through other than God is the greatest poverty and misery.”³
He (peace be upon him) also said:
“Whoever finds sufficiency in God, people will be in need of him.”⁴
**Tawakkul in Language and in Religious Usage**
According to some linguistic definitions, *tawakkul* means:
“Displaying one’s inability and relying on another.” In religious terminology, it means: “Trusting in what is with God, the Exalted, and despairing of what is in the hands of people. It is said: the one who relies on God knows that God guarantees his provision and his affairs, so he depends on Him alone and does not rely on anyone else.”⁵
It is also said:
“I entrusted my affair to so‑and‑so,” meaning “I turned to him and relied upon him regarding it.”⁶
Thus, *tawakkul* is reliance on another. However, there is a great difference between relying on a created being and relying on the Creator, and there is a vast distance between trusting the poor and trusting the One who is absolutely rich.
Therefore, reliance on God is the way of the rightly guided, the habit of the wise and the believers, and the natural and logical path—since God, the Exalted, possesses all attributes of perfection. He is the Creator, the Powerful, the Self‑Sufficient, the Merciful, and so on among His most beautiful names and attributes.
