Quranic Sciences: Lectures delivered by Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim

**Quranic Sciences: Lectures delivered by Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim at the College of Usul al-Din in Baghdad**

**(A)**
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

“Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.” (Al-Isra, 9)*

“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. But if you do not—and you will never be able to—then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers. And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow; whenever they are provided with its fruits as sustenance, they will say, ‘This is what we were given before,’ though it will be given to them in a form resembling the past. And they will have purified spouses therein, and they will abide therein eternally.” (Al-Baqarah, 23-25)

**(B)**
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is due to God, Lord of the Worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Seal of the Prophets and the Master of the Messengers, Muhammad, and his purified progeny.

To proceed: The College of Usul al-Din in Baghdad had submitted the curriculum for Quranic Sciences to His Eminence, the Grand Ayatollah, the Martyr al-Sadr (may God be pleased with him), to author its subjects. The lectures were then delivered to the students by the Professor of Quranic Sciences at the college, Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim. The late Martyr (may his soul be sanctified) authored some of them, and Sayyid al-Hakim completed the remainder. The college journal, *Majallat Risalat al-Islam* (Journal of the Message of Islam), used to publish these research papers in its issues.

Recognizing the necessity of teaching these studies during the first four years of Hawzah (traditional Islamic) education, we have reprinted these studies via offset printing from *Majallat Risalat al-Islam* and published them as follows.

We hope that the esteemed scholars will favor us with their valuable observations so that we may benefit from them in future editions, God willing.

**Translator’s Note:**
* *Correction:* In the original Arabic text you provided, the first verse quoted (*”Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable…”*) is actually from **Surah Al-Isra (Chapter 17), verse 9**, although it was labeled in your text as Al-Baqarah/9. I have corrected the citation for accuracy.
