Sciences of the Qur’an
Lectures delivered by Hujjat al‑Islam Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al‑Hakim at the Faculty of Usul al‑Din (Fundamentals of Religion) in Baghdad.
(A) In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. “Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright and gives glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.” (Al‑Isra’ 17:9) “And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our servant, then produce a surah like it and call upon your witnesses besides Allah, if you are truthful. But if you do not—and you will never be able to—then fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers. And give glad tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with fruit from them as provision, they will say: ‘This is what we were provided with before,’ and it is given to them in resemblance. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.” (Al‑Baqarah 2:23–25)
(B) In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the Seal of the Prophets and the Master of the Messengers, Muhammad, and upon his pure family. The Faculty of Usul al‑Din in Baghdad had presented the curriculum of the Sciences of the Qur’an to His Eminence Grand Ayatollah, the Martyr al‑Sadr (may God’s pleasure be upon him), so that he might write its topics. These were then to be delivered to the students by the instructor of Qur’anic Sciences at the faculty, Hujjat al‑Islam Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al‑Hakim. His Eminence (may his soul be sanctified) wrote part of them, and Sayyid al‑Hakim completed the authorship of the remaining parts. The faculty’s journal, *Risalat al‑Islam*, published those studies in its issues. When we recognized the necessity of teaching these studies during the first four years of the Hawza curriculum, we printed these studies by offset from *Risalat al‑Islam* and published them as follows, hoping that our respected teachers will provide us with their valuable observations so that we may benefit from them in future editions, God willing.
