**The Believer – Husayn al‑Kufi**

**6.** Al‑Fudayl ibn Yasar said: I heard Abu ‘Abd Allah (Imam al‑Sadiq, peace be upon him) say:
“Indeed, the devils swarm around the believer more than wasps swarm around meat.”

**7.** From one of the two (Imams al‑Baqir or al‑Sadiq, peace be upon them):
“There is no Muslim servant whom Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, afflicts with a hardship and he remains patient, except that Allah writes for him the reward of a thousand martyrs.”

**8.** From Abu al‑Hasan (peace be upon him):
“There is none among our Shi‘a whom Allah afflicts with a trial and he bears it with patience except that he receives the reward of a thousand martyrs.”

**9.** Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Among what Allah revealed to Moses (peace be upon him):

“O Moses, I have not created any creature more beloved to Me than My believing servant. I only test him with what is better for him; I grant him what is better for him, and I withhold from him what is better for him. I know best what is suitable for My servant. Let him be patient with My trials, be content with My decree, and give thanks for My blessings. When he acts according to My pleasure and obeys My command, I will record him among the truthful (the righteous) with Me.”

**10.** Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Moses ibn ‘Imran had a brother in faith whom he honored, loved, and respected. A man came to him and said: ‘I would like you to speak for me to this tyrant,’ referring to a powerful king among the kings of the Children of Israel.

He replied: ‘By Allah, I do not know him, nor have I ever asked him for anything.’

The man said: ‘There is no harm in it. Perhaps Allah will fulfill my need through you.’

Moses felt compassion for him and went with him—without informing Moses (peace be upon him). When he came to the tyrant and entered, the tyrant honored him and brought him close. He presented the man’s request, and the tyrant granted it.

Soon after, that tyrant was struck down and died. The people of his kingdom gathered in great numbers for his funeral, and the markets were closed so that people could attend it.

By divine decree, on that same day the believing young man—the brother of Moses—also died. Whenever he entered his house he would close the door behind him so that no one could reach him. When Moses wanted to see him, he would open the door and enter.

Moses forgot about him for three days. On the fourth day he remembered him and said: ‘I have neglected my brother for three days.’ So he went and opened the door and entered, and found the man dead. The creatures of the earth had crawled over him and had begun consuming the beauty of his face.

When Moses saw this, he said: ‘My Lord! Your enemy had crowds gathered for his funeral, while Your devoted servant died and the creatures of the earth were allowed to consume the beauty of his face!’

Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, said: ‘O Moses, My servant asked a favor from that tyrant and he fulfilled it. So I gathered the people of his kingdom to attend his funeral as a reward for granting the believer’s request, so that he would leave this world without any good deed remaining with Me for which he would deserve reward.

As for this believer, I allowed the creatures of the earth to consume the beauty of his face because he asked that tyrant for a favor—an act that was not pleasing to Me—so that he would leave this world with no sin remaining upon him.’”
