**[The Reward of the Toothstick (Siwāk)]**

My father (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Aḥmad ibn Idrīs narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad narrated to me—

Ibrāhīm ibn Isḥāq narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā, from ʿUbayd Allāh al‑Dahqān, from Durust ibn Manṣūr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sinān, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said:

“In the siwāk there are twelve qualities: it is from the Sunnah, it purifies the mouth, sharpens the sight, pleases the Most Merciful, whitens the teeth, removes decay, strengthens the gums, increases appetite, removes phlegm, increases memory, multiplies good deeds, and the angels are pleased by it.”

Muḥammad ibn al‑Ḥasan narrated to me; he said: Muḥammad ibn al‑Ḥasan al‑Ṣaffār narrated to me, from Aḥmad ibn al‑Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Faḍḍāl, from ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd al‑Madāʾinī, from Muṣaddiq ibn Ṣadaqah, from ʿAmmār al‑Sābāṭī, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said:

Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him) said: “If people knew what is in the siwāk (of virtue), they would sleep with it beneath their blankets.”

My father (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, from Muḥammad ibn al‑Ḥusayn ibn Abī al‑Khaṭṭāb, from Ṣafwān ibn Yaḥyā, from Ibrāhīm ibn Abī al‑Bilād, from his father Yaḥyā ibn Abī al‑Bilād, from Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), who said:

“The siwāk removes phlegm and increases the intellect.”
