When is a head of state described as “stupid”?

Generally, in political or media discourse, this description is used when a person’s actions are seen as demonstrating a clear lack of understanding or repeated poor judgment, rather than simply making a decision that others do not like.

Among the main situations in which this description might be used are:

  • Repeatedly misjudging the consequences: Making decisions that clearly produce counterproductive results, and then repeating the same approach.
  • Extreme inconsistency in positions: Announcing a policy and then repeatedly reversing it without a logical explanation.
  • Ignoring available information and expertise: Especially when warnings from advisers and intelligence agencies are clear.
  • Making impulsive decisions instead of decisions based on analysis and reliable information.
  • Failure to learn from mistakes: A single mistake does not mean stupidity, but repeating the same mistake despite seeing its consequences may lead critics to use that description.
  • Displaying obvious ignorance of key issues related to economics, politics, history, or international relations, while insisting on incorrect information.
  • Harming the interests of the state as a result of decisions that could easily have been avoided.

However, objectively speaking, it is better to distinguish between “a stupid person” and “a stupid decision.” A politician may make a bad decision because of incomplete information, political pressure, miscalculations, or conflicting interests, without this necessarily meaning that the person lacks intelligence.

So where does this leave the American president when he is being led by Israel toward the abyss?
