Ayatollah Makarem: Countering factors of corruption

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, spoke in a meeting with organisers of I’tikaf (Islamic retreat), about the importance of understanding and tackling the factors of corruption.

Speaking about the current situation, his eminence stated:”In the history of mankind, never has there been easier access to devices which lead to sin then now. Today with the existence of satellite channels, internet and mobile phones, if something corruptive occurs in the west, it spreads to the east in no time at all.”

The Ayatollah highlighted the objective that the arrogant powers aim to achieve through the spread of corruption. He stated “The first motive in the eyes of the propagators of corruption is playing with lust. However, alongside this they also have political and economic objectives important for them. They say that if a society is pulled towards corruption that it becomes easier to control the people. Some devices of corruption such as the production and promotion of narcotics is profitable for them in furthering their political objectives.”

Regarding our response to such an overwhelming opposition, the highly respected scholar stated: “We must not be passive in our response towards these activities. Some say that we have lost in hope in reforming the current situation and with these words they lighten the load of responsibility from their own shoulders. However we say that we must work till we have the capability to do so. The Prophet of God (s)  stated to Imam Ali (a)that if even one person becomes guided by your hands, that is better than everything the sun shines upon.”

Concluding this segment of his talk, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi highlighted the importance of understanding factors which help us in countering the corruption and the need for strengthening them. “Day by day we must strengthen the factors of deterrence in opposition to the factors and causes of corruption. One of those factors is I’tikaf (Islamic retreat). Congregational prayers, Friday prayers, pilgrimage, commemoration of Imam Husain (a), visitation to Karbala and the month of Ramadhan are other factors that can help curtail corruption.”
