The War Has Entered a Naval Phase Between Iran and the United States
Based on the developments reported today, September 7, 2026, it can be said that the war has indeed entered a clearer and more dangerous maritime phase between Iran and the United States, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. However, more accurately, this should be described as a naval conflict/struggle over maritime navigation, rather than a full-scale conventional “ship war” at this stage.
What makes this phase different is:
– The United States struck three Iranian oil tankers, according to the U.S. military, after Washington said that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had targeted U.S. warships with ballistic missiles.
– Iran responded by targeting vessels it described as unauthorized, and warned that its response would be harsher if the United States continued targeting Iranian shipping.
– Commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply, with an average of around 10 cargo ships per day over the past ten days, the lowest level since May.
– Iran announced that it would establish a new restricted/prohibited maritime zone outside the Strait of Hormuz, along with new shipping routes.
– Meanwhile, the United States says it will use its naval forces to escort oil tankers through the strait, meaning that commercial vessels have now become a direct part of the conflict.
The Most Dangerous Development Now
The equation is shifting from:
Air and missile strikes on territory → to a struggle over the sea, maritime navigation, and energy.
This is extremely important because the Strait of Hormuz is not merely a military location; it is a major artery for global energy exports. Therefore, any escalation in attacks on tankers or warships could lead to a major surge in oil prices, insurance costs, and shipping rates. Brent crude approached $97 per barrel today amid the escalation.
The most dangerous question in the next phase is: Will Iran limit itself to preventing or threatening vessels linked to the United States, or will it actually begin trying to establish a maritime sphere of influence around the Strait of Hormuz?
If the second scenario occurs, we would be facing a completely different phase of the war, because Washington would have to choose between accepting Iranian restrictions or entering a broader naval confrontation.
