Hezbollah and the Future Prospects – Abdul Sattar Al-Jabri 1

**Episode One / Circumstances of Emergence**

When researching a personality or a political entity that has had an impact on the reality of a region, it is necessary to study the circumstances of its emergence and development within the balance of power, because this helps in forming an objective understanding of the subject under study.

In 1979, the Islamic Revolution in Iran succeeded, and among its core principles was the support of liberation movements around the world. One of its priorities was to adopt a position of hostility toward the occupying Zionist entity.

At the same time, the Lebanese civil war erupted, driven in part by the Zionist entity. One of the aims of that war was to push the Palestinians away from the borders of occupied Palestine, since Palestinian fighters used to enter the occupied territories to carry out military operations against the Zionist occupation and then return to their bases in the refugee camps in Lebanon. For this reason, Zionist forces invaded Lebanese territory and reached Beirut. They also allowed their Lebanese allies to carry out the Sabra and Shatila massacre. These events eventually led to the removal of the Palestinians from the borders with the occupied territories and the relocation of the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Lebanon to Tunisia.

Under those difficult circumstances, the martyr Mustafa Chamran was present in Lebanon, where he met with many young Lebanese Shiites. From there began the story of establishing the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon, which was given the name **Hezbollah**, becoming a military and political force that, over four decades, transformed the political and security balance in Lebanon and the wider region.

Thus, the circumstances of Hezbollah’s establishment were those of defensive jihad to protect Lebanese land against the Zionist invasion of Lebanon. The fighters of the resistance succeeded in forcing the Zionist occupation forces to withdraw from Lebanese territory. They also compelled the U.S. naval forces and the French forces to withdraw from Lebanon through their resistance operations, which demonstrated exceptional courage, high levels of planning, organization, secrecy, and a remarkable ability to carry out sophisticated operations the region had not previously witnessed.
