Addressing a crowd of scholars protesting against an order by the Bahraini regime to dissolve the Council of Scholars yesterday, prominent Shia cleric Ayatollah Sheikh Eisa Qasim issued a statement against the order for the dissolution of the Council in which he stated that the termination of the council would be tantamount to an attack on Islam itself. In his address he stated, ‘…according to us, the dissolution of the Council… is an attack on the religion, the Qur’an and Islamic teachings.’
He pointed out that this move on the part of the regime would not hinder the actions of the scholars in any way. The ruling will have no bearing on the ‘groundbreaking realities of the country or any effect on propagation by the scholars… [and] this ruling will not lead to any negative effect on the spirit of those in solidarity with us.’
Addressing the scholars attending the protest, he urged them not to allow anything to weaken their resolve in serving the cause. ‘Today there is an expectation from all of you not to allow anything to weaken your propagation. A thousand laws and a thousand decisions such as these should not become an obstacle for your movement.’
Emphasising the importance of scholars as an integral part of protecting society he spoke of their role within the country, ‘A thousand laws and a thousand decisions such as these should not become an obstacle for your movement. You are supporters of this country and a source of pride for this nation. You are courageous in regards to the future benefits [of this country] and you are more worthy of this nation than others and you have no other option but to defend and protect this nation and on this path, religion, intellect, the intellectuals, the world public opinion and the stance of the free nations is with you. [So] with your trust in Allah, keep moving forward.’
This move by the Bahraini regime coincides with the third anniversary of the uprising in 2011 amid widespread protests around the Persian Gulf state.
