The United States has denied visa requests from hundreds of Israeli military and intelligence officials over the past year, a report in an Israeli newspaper says.
According to the report published in the Hebrew-language daily Maariv, Washington is also giving short-term visas to Israeli army officials who are already in the US or making some of them leave for Canada to get their visas renewed after weeks.
“In the last 20 years, I have been to the US dozens of times as part of my job and have never encountered a problem,” one Israeli military official told Maariv.
“During the past year, everything has changed: I’ve heard many stories of defense [sic] establishment people who weren’t able to renew their visas, and it didn’t make sense to me until I tried to renew my own – and failed,” the official said.
The report also says that at least 26 high-ranking Israeli military officers and officials from the Mossad or Shin Bet could not obtain US visas.
Israeli officials have not provided any explanations for the matter. Some analysts say the move might be due to Washington’s fear of industrial espionage by Israeli agents.
