Expert Hails Addition of Tarteel Category to Iran Int’l Quran Contest

TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian veteran Quran activist hailed the move by the organizing committee of Iran’s International Holy Quran Competition to add the category of Tarteel to the contest.

The 37th edition of Iran’s International Holy Quran Competition will be held in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad in spring.

In this edition, a new category, namely Tarteel recitation of the Quran, will be included in the contest.

Speaking to IQNA, Mahmoud Lotfinia described the move as a positive one, saying that among other things, it will help to promote Tarteel recitation.

He added that it will also serve to introduce to the Muslim world the talents in the field of Tarteel recitation.

Lotfinia also noted that while Tahghigh recitation is more common in countries like Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia, Tarteel is also very popular in many Muslim countries, especially in Arab nations.

Tarteel is the Arabic word for hymnody. The term is commonly translated in reference to the recitation of the Quran “in proper order” and “with no haste”.

Iran’s Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization annually organizes the international Quran competition with the participation of Quran activists from various countries.

Quran reciters and memorizers from over 80 countries took part in the 36th edition, held in Tehran in April 2019.
