[6] One of his sayings (peace be upon him), when he was advised not to pursue Ṭalḥah and al‑Zubayr and not to prepare for fighting them
[In it, he clarifies that he (peace be upon him) is not one who is deceived.]
“By Allah, I shall not be like the hyena, which sleeps to the prolonged sound of tapping until the hunter reaches it and the one lying in wait deceives it. Rather, I strike—with the one advancing toward the truth—the one turning away from it; and with the obedient listener, I strike the sinful doubter, continually, until my appointed day comes upon me.
By Allah, I have continued to be deprived of my right, with others being favored over me, from the time Allah the Exalted took His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) until this very day of the people.”
Footnotes:
1. “Yakhtiluha” — deceives or outwits it.
2. “Rāṣiduha” — the one lying in wait for it, the hunter.
3. “Al‑ʿāṣī al‑murīb” — the disobedient and doubtful/rebellious one.
