Failure of Fragile Truce, in Hodiedah, will Come at Great Humanitarian Cost

Shaky ceasefire, in Hodiedah, continues to hold for its first day in effect, regardless of some violations in critical areas. The consequences if this truce collapses will be dire. The humanitarian situation, already the worst in the human history, will go beyond fixing. AS The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Yemen said on Monday that “the cease-fire in Hodeidah will take place at midnight on December 18th, 2018 local time, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the Presidency of the General Staff welcomed the ceasefire that went into effect at midnight Tuesday in the strategic port city of Hodeidah.

The Spokesman for the Armed Forces, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, confirmed the commitment of the Yemeni Army and Popular Committees to the ceasefire which was reached last week in Stockholm. Saree also pointed out that the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the Presidency of the General Staff hopes that the ceasefire agreement in Hodeidah will be the start of an overall halt in the whole country and bring peace and lift the suffering of the Yemeni people as the situation in Hodeidah more humanitarian than political. For the forces of aggression disavow the implementation of the Hodeidah agreement, the Army and Popular Committees announced that it will be ready to respond.

Doubts on the US-Saudi Aggression and mercenaries seriousness of peace talks followed their continued violation and targeting Hodiedah. Starting during the period of consultations, the Health Ministry had announced in a statement that the total death toll by airstrikes and artillery shells, reached 15 citizens, while 23 others were injured, mostly children and women. Hours after the announcement of ceasefire to go into effect at midnight Tuesday, the US-Saudi warplanes flew over the city of Hodeidah and a number of its districts. The US-Saudi mercenaries carried a military infiltration operation against the sites of the Yemeni Army and Popular Committees in the West Coast, also hours after the cease-fire came into force. Brig. Gen. Yehia Sari, verified the continuation of the aerial targeting of residential neighborhoods by the US-Saudi aggression, where on Sunday 38 airstrikes were launched including 12 raids on Hodeidah. The mercenaries fired more than 80 Artillery Shells targeting different areas in Kilo 16, 50th Street, 7th of July St and adjacent neighborhoods in the city of Hodeidah. They fired more than 50 Artillery Shells in different areas of Tahita.

The National Delegation renewed Monday evening its commitment toward the Stockholm agreement, announced by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and considered the announcement of a cessation of military operations in Hodeidah and the truce in Taiz. The Head of the National Delegation, Mohammed Abdulsalam has said earlier in a statement that “the National Delegation is keen to lift the suffering of the Yemeni People and preserve the sovereignty and independence of Yemen.” Abdulsalam confirmed that the delegation will spare no effort to make the consultations successful, end the peace and end the war of aggression and lift the siege. Brig. Gen. Yehia Sari also confirmed that they are keen to create the atmosphere for the success of efforts to achieve peace and end the war.

As the humanitarian crisis in Yemen is characterized as the world’s worst by the U.N. continues, and largely out of the public’s mind, the peace talks was the only hope to stop this catastrophic situation. More than 22 million out of Yemen’s total population of 29 million are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the U.N. Already, more than 8 million people are “facing pre-famine conditions, meaning they are entirely reliant on external aid for survival. That number is likely to reach 14 million in the coming months – half the country’s population – as the effects of long-term malnutrition and compromised immune systems set in. The United Nations reported that the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, already the worst in the world, will deteriorate in 2019, nearly four years after US-Saudi Aggression siege on Yemen, an intense campaign of airstrikes and ground attacks which are still ongoing.

The importance of this truce and its survival through expected violations, comes from the consequences its failure will have on the already deteriorated humanitarian situation in Hodiedah and Yemen in general. More delay in getting aid to those who need it, will push the situation beyond the point of return. Many reports have been published by different aid and humanitarian groups and organizations, all warned of an even worst disaster if the confrontations continue around the city of Hodiedah or if any military attempt to take over the city take place. Food, Medicine and Oil derivatives need start flowing through the only port capable of handling large quantities of these supplies, Hodiedah Ports. Main road currently subject to bombings and airstrikes are limiting all aid from reaching regions in very dire need.

The hopes of the Yemeni People is hanging in the continuation of this ceasefire. It is not only the first step to achieving peace in Yemen but it proves the Yemeni people ability to set together to figure out their differences and find solutions to their problems. The Sweden agreement exposed to the world the reality of the US-Saudi aggression and pointed out to the cause of the suffering of the Yemeni People.
