According to the Astan (custodianship) of the holy shrine, the black flag, which represented mourning and had been raised at the beginning of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram, was replaced with a red one.
The ceremony was held on the first day of the month of Rab al-Awwal, the third Hijri month, which marked the end of the month of Safar.
Shia Muslims around the world every year in the months of Muharram and Safar hold rituals mourning the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), his family and his companions.
