An Iranian wrestler has decided to forgo his title and gold medal in the world championship in Poland in order to avoid fighting with an Israeli wrestler.
Alireza Karimi, 23, decided to sacrifice his chances at taking the championship title in solidarity with the suffering people of Palestine and forfeited his match against an Israeli wrestler.
He was the favourite to take the gold medal and has previously won the bronze medal in the 2015 championship for 86kgs.
He was received by much praise in the Islamic world for this position which is not unprecedented for Iranian sportsmen.
In occupied Palestine placards were raised in honour of the sportsman calling him the pride of Palestine and thanking him for his stance.
