Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has pardoned or commuted the sentences of a number of Iranian prisoners on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
The Leader’s decision came in response to a letter from Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani asking for clemency regarding eligible convicts ahead of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Larijani had asked for the pardoning or commutation of the jail terms of the prisoners, who had been convicted by general and revolutionary courts, the State Punishment Organization, and the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured.
